Compare/Sync functions and plug-ins

I have two questions.

Q1 : (Note: I had posted a similar query in Data Dude (Visual Studio Team System for DB Professionals) forums and got an answer (nothing conclusive though). Given the context, thought this will also be a good forum to run the post). Onto my question :

Data Dude has Compare and Synchronization functionality for SQL Server. Are there any plans to integrate the same as part of SQL Server Management Studio ? We DBAs work only with SSMS and not Visual Studio. Are there any near term/long terms plans in this direction ?

I believe it will be good if you have upadted the same on http://connect.microsoft.com/ with the requirement, as they are monitored on daily basis and your request might be considered in future releases of Service pack.

compability of visual studio express vs visual studio

Can anyone tell me if Visual Studio Express and Visual Studio Report Designer
are compatible when designing reports? We tried to import .RDL files between
the two and were unsuccessful.
Our intent is to give our user something like Visual Studio Express to
develop reports , but yet be flexiable enough to maintain them or enhance
them using the full Visual Studio version. Or, take a report done in the full
version and allow he user to modify it in the Visual Studio Express version.
I highly doubt this is possible but I need some outside opinions on this.

Dave SundellNone of this is necessary if you are using RS 2005. It comes with its own
version of VS. It will integrate with it if you have it, otherwise it will
install its own. If you are not writing your own assemblies then no need for
buying VS. This is a change from RS 2000.

I need users to beable to modify reports that were designed/developed using
Report Designer. And visa versa, beable to modify reports that were done with
Vistual Studio Express and edit them in full Visual Stduio.
I suppose we can buy them a full version of Visual Studio but some asked me
to look into Visual Studio Express. I am installing it now in a Virtual PC
mode as to not mess my normal Visual Studio environment.
Back to Report Builder. I am sorry but it is not the same as Report Designer
and we have had user experienced in Crystal reports and we need to give them
something a little closer, like Report Designer. But we were pointed towards
Visual Studio Express as a solution.

>|||No, I am talking about Report Designer not Report Builder. RS 2005 when it
installed BI (or whatever it calls it, when you install Report Designer) it
will integrate with VS 2005 if you have it, otherwise it installs a special
version just for RS 2005 Report Designer.
This was not the case with RS 2000 report designer. For that you first had
to have VS 2003. Again, that is not the case for RS 2005 report designer.

for the report designer. Just use the SQL 2005 CD and install Report

>|||It is a version of VS just for hosting the Report Designer. Functionally no
difference. However, it only installs if you do not have VS 2005 installed.
If VS 2005 is there then it integrates with it. Also, I found out that if
you have installed Report Designer first and then VS 2005 that you will not
see Report Designer in it. If you want Report Designer integrated with VS
(for instance you have VB.Net 2005 installed) then install VB.Net 2005
first, then report designer.

Thank you for your time and response to this matter.
In conclusion, I did install Report Designer and it seems to be a better
route then installing SQL Express since the user really doesn't need SQL
installed but simply the environment to design a report.

Common Objects in Management Studio?

I recently started using the SQL Server Management Studio that comes with SQL
Server 2005 in place of SQL Query Analyzer that comes with SQL Server 2000.
In SQL Query Analyzer's Object Explorer there is a set of Common Objects
under all of the DataBase Objects. These were very handy for me when I would
forget the syntax for a certain Transact-SQL function. It is more convenient
than looking it up in Books Online.
I can't seem to find the equivalent of the Common Objects in SQL Server
Management Studio. Anyone know where they are?

Welcome to Management Studio! You will find that there is a lot of
functionality in Query Analyzer and Enterprise Manager that was not
brought over to Mgmt Studio. No, please don't ask me why! All I can suggest
is go to http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/ProductFeedback/ and post a
suggestion for it to come back.
(I will have to admit that this is a feature of Query Analyzer that I
was not aware of myself.)

|||A lot of that functionality can be replaced by templates that you can add
yourself. Open Template Explorer and right-click on the top node, select New
> Template.
Also, if you are just looking for a quick syntax help, you should check
Dynamic Help window. To open it click Help > Dynamic Help menu option. Once
the window opens, you can dock it somewhere in the Management Studio shell.
As you type in an editor, you will see links to help topics that relate to
what you just typed, including syntax help for T-SQL.

Committing data to SQL from a Visual Basic Form

I have novice level visual basic knowledge using Visual Studio 2005 and have little knowledge of SQL using SQL express. I am attempting to create a SQL database which initially consists of a single table bound to a Visual Basic form for data entry. So far I have been able to bind a VB form to a SQL database creating a DataSet, DataAdapter, and utilizing the default binding navigator. I also seem to have functioning Stored Procedures.

The VB form is able to add data to the SQL table and I can toggle through the data while the VB app is running but when I terminate the app and load it again all newly added data is not available from the SQL table.

I have seen other strings on this subject and viewed many tutorials but they only bring me as far as I am. None of them address the concept of permanently committing data to SQL from the VB form. FYI…data entered manually into the SQL table is stored, just not data from the form.

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong?

Are you using the user instance feature in SQL Server express ? Then you will have to set the "Copy" property to "Never" for the in your solution included datafile.

|||If you are starting your program from inside visual basic the application is being rebuilt and the SQL database as created in visual basic is overwriting the database you created last time you ran your program. If you open your program from the bin\debug directory within your project folder, make changes to the data, exit the program, then go back into the program the same way, your database should have been updated with the changes.|||@.Bluebuddha: Did you find the setting ?

Commit and Rollback on a batch

Hi!

I am using VB.NET 2005 and/or SQL Server 2005 studio manager.

I have a string of about 20 or 30 inserts updates and deletes. I want to process all or nothing. If there is an error that prevents a single transaction from completeing, i want to roll back the entire batch.

One solution i read is to test fot @.@.error after each statement. This is not desirable as i receive the batch as a single string already made. I would have to separate all the statements and insert the error testing myself.

I would prefere to simply execute the batch as an all or nothing batch.

Certainly this is a common request. But the only solutions i can find involve extensive re-working of the source batch of transactions. I may have up to 100 statements in my batch.

Any Ideas?

I know there is a workaround, but I expect a command line action in the action listbox in the BI Dev Studio.

This is actually as expected: this action type is not listed in the UI intentionally. Actions of this type are unsafe, so they are explicetly 'demoted' in the UI. However, if you already have a command line action (like in the migrated cube), you should still be able to see them with the proper type.
