comparing getdate()

hi I have done this before but can't seem to recall now ...I want to compare a field in my table with getdate() the field type short date which also has the time stamp...doing field_date > getdate() does not work to get data of today...can someone help!if a time is not provided when the date is entered, it defaults to midnight (when it first becomes "today"), so sometimes that can throw these types of queries off.
