Comparing table structures between databases

What is the easiest way to compare the table structure of two databases?
I have inherited a project and have found a couple of undocumented
inconsistencies between the development and production databases.
Is there an in-built function or a utility that can help with this?
Thanks,
MikeUnfortunatly no there isn't an easy way.
If you have connection to the internet log on to the site
http://www.adeptsql.com/download.htm and download AdeptSQL
Diff ver 1.6.
We have used that for all our server and works very well.
N.B. You can program it yourself in SQL but will take a
bit of time, and this will hi-light every difference.

Comparing range within strings.

Hello, my first post :)

I'm currently working on a project that involves IP checking, here's my scenario:

A user enters an IP address of 10.174.55.65 let's say, I want to somehow be able to check and see if this IP address is in between column A (It's called ip) which consists the IP data of 10.174.0.0 and column B (It's called EndingIp) which has the IP data 10.174.255.255, so generally speaking I'm checking for the 3rd and 4th spots within the IP address and I'm trying to see if it's between the IP's in column A and B.

The thing is these are all strings, so how do I approch a stiuation like that within SQL?

Btw, I attached a picture of the table to be more clear.

Thanks in advance for the advice...... I'm trying to see if it's between the IP's in column A and B.If I understand it well, you could just check withWHERE val BETWEEN a AND bThis will only work if e.g. 10.1.17.32 is written as 010.001.017.032, i.e., if all four entries have 3 digits. In that case "alphabetic" order is the ordering you want.
It's probably more difficult to convert val, A and B to this format, so you will have to extract the four parts with some scalar function, recompose (either as string, in the 4x3 digit form, or as an integer: field1 x 256^3 + field2 x 256^2 + field3 x 256 + field4) and then have the BETWEEN condition.
Available scalar functions for this purpose may differ from system to system, so I won't go into details here.|||if you would kindly mention which database you're using, birko, i'll move this thread to the approproate forum where you may get more specific answers|||I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum, anyways I'm using SQL 2000 server and I kind of fixed the problem of comparing within the range logically, here's what I have in a stored procedure which seems to work for IP range checking:

CREATE PROCEDURE ipRange

-- This procedure checks for the IP range.
@.ipAdd varchar(50) as

SELECT
case
when (@.ipAdd <= '10.174.90.90' and @.ipAdd >= '10.174.80.80')
then 'IP EXISTS'
END

Of course my next step is to get the values from the columns and do the comparring with them, so I'm off to do that :)

Just a background about the project, we have an ASP.NET web application coded in C# and there's a part where the user has to enter an IP address, we have to see whether the IP exists within the database or not and that's where the range check comes in since some customers have a bunch of IP addresses that range from let's say 10.174.0.0 up to 10.174.255.255, so we want to check within the range of the IP addresses in out database, it's a long project but hopfully it can be done soon.

Thank you guys :)

Comparing data model

All,
An up gradation is going on in my project. Here, I have some tables
in a project specific database and the same (w.r.t name) set of tables
(but the modified one) in a different database. We are using
sqlserver2000.
Now I need to find out what are modifications- means the name &
features of the new columns.
Just by looking the table's structure and manually comparing it, the
work can be done.
If any one knows any approach that can compare the two tables (with the
same name residing in different db) then the work can be done more
effectively.
Any input will be highly appreciated. Not sure if this is what you need. There is a tool to compare
schema/structure of databases, Red Gate SQL Compare. www.red-gate.com.

can use SchemaCrawler, a free open-source tool that can compare schemas
as well as data. SchemaCrawler is a command-line tool to output your
database schema and data in a readable form. The output is designed to
be diff-ed with previous versions of your database schema.

All you will need is a JDBC driver, a good free one is jTDS

hi i doing a project like "IMesh", whatever ,i will take a sentence

You probably want to look at full-text indexing.

compacting / to repair base of data sql, using the msde

I am developing a project of the access for a friend, more I am with the
following doubts:
Does some exist it sorts things out of compacting / to repair base of data
sql, using the msde or the adp.?
MSDE databases do not require compacting. When updates or other changes are
made, the space freed when a row is deleted is reused automatically. For the
most part, MSDE/SQL Server databases are not subject to the file corruption
problems that are associated (from time-to-time ) with JET databases. There
are utilities (DBCC for one) that can be used to perform maintenance on the
database, but it's unusual to have to resort to these for smaller databases
as typically implemented with MSDE.

Compact Edition not in Data Source List

After I installed the SQL Server Compact Edition, I start a new VS 2005 Basic project. When I try to create a new connection I do not see the Compact Edition in the list of data sources.

I have installed previously SQL Server CE, Everywhere, Mobile, 2005 Mobile but I uninstalled them all.

Can anyone give me an idea why I can't see the Compact Edition as a data source?

Thanks.

Hello

From what you'r saying maybe you need to re-install the SQL Server CE.
I have the same problem but it's because I'm using VB.NET Express Edition.

compact

No one answered in another group, please help.

Using access 2000 /msde
I know how to compact the access project file (.adp), there's a menu choice
for that.
How do I compact the tables and stored procedures on the server? ( The .MDF
file)
I only have the DOS promp OSQL utility to work with.
thanksHi

There is not a compact command as such in SQL Server. If you want to shrink
the log file check out

Coming from ReportBuilder...

(warning: possibly stupid questions may follow)
I've currently in the process of porting a project written in Delphi with
reports generated in ReportBuilder 10.
I've never had anything to do with creating reports in a .NET environment
previously so I'm just wondering if there are any things I should be aware
of? The new application will be running off an SQL server 2005, but I would
also like it to be able to run off SQL server express.. Is this feasible?
I'm also wondering about the architecture.. Do the reports *have* to be
generated server side and be fetched via WS or can I embed reports in my
application and just fetch the data from the sql-server? If both methods are
doable, what's the best approach? The application will primarily be used
in-house with a small load but may be turned into a commercial project
somewhere down the road.
Any help is much appreciated!

I'm writing the application using C# in VS2008|||In that case, you can use the .NET Report Control for either C# web apps or
C# windows apps. Personally, I prefer using the web based report server.
Then your reports are served via a web browser, which means zero deployment.
All you need on the client side is MSIE 6 or 7. End-users can even write
their own ad-hoc reports via a web browser with Report Builder (comes out of
the box with MSSQL/SSRS 2005).

the Report Control. Last question, is this similar(ish) to use as
ReportBuilder?

I'm running sql2000 and 2005 (RTM) side by side (and vs2003 and 2005 RTM). I want

When i want to create a DataSource, i can specify the connection, but
when i click on finish the screen is not closed whatever info/name/etc.
i fill in. I can only cancel the dialog box.
When i add a new SSIS package i get this exception:

Any idea what's causing this? ( i reinstalled SQL 2005/SSIS several
times)
Thanks
Marco
Do you use any third-party add-ins for Visual Studio?
Do you use source control integration with Visual Studio,
if yes - which source control provider?|||Yes. i'm using DevExpress CodeRush/Refactor... no source control integration.

Thanks

Marco|||Could you please try removing the DevExpress add-in and see if this fixes the situation? Looking at our code - we are simply notifying environment about new file, and some external code subscribed to this event reports failure, thus cancelling adding a new file. Since it does not happen normally, I suspect the DevExpress add-in causes this.

I'll try to get my hands on the DevExpress CodeRush/Refactor to check what's going on.|||Thanks!

Disabling fixed the problem.. I will send my errorreport also to DevExpress.
